Slipping beneath the surface of the glistening ocean on a glorious spring day, I was met with a magical scene that will stay with me forever. A playful humpback whale calf spotted me and my camera, boldly venturing from her protective mother’s side to take a closer look. It’s possible she was enjoying her first taste of independence and freedom.
The amazing feeling of silent connection was overwhelming as we locked eyes, viewing each other with mutual respect and curiosity. The majestic creatures in this image were on their 10,000 kilometre annual migration journey along Australia’s eastern coastline, heading back to the Antarctic after spending a few months in sub-tropical waters. It was my honour to capture their journey during this underwater photography shoot.
