It was an honour to be in the presence of this humpback whale mother and calf, and to be able to capture an image which perfectly immortalised their beautiful bond. There is no other experience that can really compare to how it feels to witness such magnificent marine life in such serene existence.

I was on an underwater photography expedition in Tongan waters when I was fortunate enough to encounter these humpback whales. The combination of the deep blue waters, sun rays streaming through from the surface, and the graceful arching dive of the calf below its mother was a moment of pure reverence. It was a powerful reminder as to exactly why whales are considered royalty of the ocean.
