The inquisitive and very friendly Dwarf Minke Whale. A seasonal visitor to the Great Barrier Reef every year around June/July. I have recently returned from a trip to the Ribbon Reefs with @mikeballdive where we had some breathtaking encounters with these curious marine mammals. Nothing gets your heart rate up quite as much as a great white shark coming out of nowhere. It fascinates me to watch (from the safety of a cage) the behaviour of these magnificent apex predators. They have evolved their hunting skills over thousands of years and to watch one disappear from view only to reappear from an angle where you weren’t expecting it to come from definitely keeps you on your toes when preparing for a photo opportunity!

Sharks have been around for more than 450 million years and survived the 5 mass extinctions that our planet has endured. This keystone species holds a critical role in maintaining balance in the marine ecosystem.
